Life and Sur-reality : Significance of Trivial Substances

This thesis aims to interpret my artworks produced from 2009 to 2011 from a surrealistic standpoint and to clarify their historical implication as a successor of contemporary surrealism. Contemporary artworks involved in surrealism have more a complex and liberal tendency in terms of their structure and narrative compared to those influenced directly by Surrealist Manifesto(Le Manifeste du Surréalisme) by André Breton in 1942. Contemporary surrealism was deeply inspired by the introduction of the World Wide Web, which created a vast, ideal space for each individual to express their ideas without limits. This allows every human being to propagate their personal contentions or individual episodes, many of which are dissolved into or based on certain realities. Through the process of dissolving, facts are overlaid and altered with random personal stories of many unspecified individuals, transforming existing realities into more unreliable, fantastic narratives. This phenomenon has led tremendous changes in contemporary narrative. The freedom of expression via a virtual space embossed the history of each ordinary yet unique individual, formerly regarded as humble, mean subordinates of History of powers and authorities. In the first part, this thesis posits the significance of these small individuals, the effects of arbitrary histories, and their role on cultural facts and social incidents. The thesis also analyzes the process of different narrative formats(e.g., newspaper articles and fantastic literature) that overlap and transform realistic facts into something new and surreal. To bolster this observation, the thesis makes a comparison of Surrealist Manifesto and contemporary surrealistic artworks and narratives, examines the process of personal-history-into-surrealistic-language transformation, and discusses how these are applied in my series of artworks. In particular, this thesis analyzes the work of Remedios Varo, an Italian-born Mexican surrealism artist who had a major influence on my text works, studying how ordinary behaviors such as daily chores or meeting others can be magnified into a surrealistic phase when they are overlain with a fantastic horizon. The second part of this thesis explains the process of the poetic transformation of daily language in my artwork, mostly drawn from suburban experiences and daily household chores. Simple and ordinary incidents are merged with special surrealistic techniques such as dépaysement, the merging of non-related events such that they create a magical phenomenon. In my artworks, realistic descriptions of factors such as various household chores, recipes, or newspaper articles, as well as imaginary narratives such as myths, dreams, and fabricated theatrical scripts are juxtaposed; their surreal characteristics are analyzed and then classified into three major categories: the Dépaysement of Personal History, the Dramatic Development of Trivial Events, and the Dream-ization of Reality. Unlike existing surrealism, the contemporary surrealistic perspective is not a device that helps one to escape from or criticize the real world but is tendency that enables us to observe the existing universe and its trivial belongings. From this perspective, I emphasize each small story delivered from an ordinary individual, bring them into the realm of art, rediscover pedestrian daily routines, and convert them into magical events within my series of artwork.
