The North Korean nuclear crisis and the role of international NGOs - VOD (1) : Global agenda workshop

초록/요약

First the lecturer introduces the International Crisis Group to the students. To summarize, ICG is an NGO focusing primarily on security issues. Moving on to the lecture, Dr. Peter Beck brought up an issue of the freeze in six-party talks and the February 25th's declaration of North Korea to be a nuclear state. The fundamental problem is that there is no willingness by Washington and Pyongyang to negotiate to compromise even though peaceful resolution is in need for the stake of 70 million people in the Korean Peninsular. So what can the NGOs do in this situation? The broad answer is to research for solutions, propose to governments, and to put external pressure on government for the right direction. Discussing the solutions the lecturer mentioned the third-party's help to bring the negotiations back on table and the economic reforms as a method to facilitate regime change in North Korea. Followed by a brief lecture, there were extended discussions. Students brought up various questions related to current security issues and the lecturer has shown great interest in students' ideas with detailed comments.
