Civilizations in world politics : Beyond East and West : Global agenda workshop

초록/요약

The concept of civilization and international relations has been covered during the lecture. In order to effectively explain the lecture’s opinion, the Samuel Huntington’s Clash of Civilization Theory has been explained which is the theory that conflict between distinct groups based on religion and cultural identities is inevitable and will dominate in the post cold-war period. The lecturer argued that emphasis on the unity and uniformity of different civilizations and hence on sharp differences among civilization is misguided. In addition, he also mentioned that the civilizations are better thought of in pluralist terms. Civilizations are pluralistic and highly diverse within themselves, and more likely to engage with each other than to clash. Creating civilization also entailed creating the contrasting idea of other or barbarian. This had implications for war and peace among and between the various political units of the region.
