In this study, the use of bi-ligand co-functionalized gold nanoparticles in a highly selective and sensitive colorimetric probe for Ca 2+ ions is demonstrated and this probe also determined the concentrations of Ca 2+ ions in serum samples. © 2012 The Royal Society of Chemistry.
