Economic Growth in South Asia, with reference to Education for Female and Bangladesh

This study investigated to what extent female education was related to economic growth and what the other explanatory variables had influence in accelerating economic growth in South Asian countries. Besides this, the study focused to analyze further the relationship between female education and economic growth in Bangladesh. This study used a mixed method design; for quantitative part, comprehensive panel data covered South Asian eight countries including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri-Lanka over a period of 23 years. Using random effect regression model, the empirical result showed that female primary education, labor force participation, FDI and ODA had significant positive impact on long term economic growth. For qualitative part, in a case study of Bangladesh, used face to face and open-ended in-depth interviews of 22 participants, and the result showed the positive relationship between female education and economic growth, similarly remittance, RMG and TVET also indicated the positive relationship in long term economic growth in Bangladesh. Unfortunately, female primary enrollment and secondary enrollment had shown statistically insignificant sign, even though like other developing regions, this region also more focused on education enrollment rather than completion and did not concentrate to identify the reason behind these. For this reason, this study result will help to formulate and implement government policies to improve South Asian countries socio-economic condition for long term economic growth as well as Bangladesh.
