A Study on the Translation of Culture Specific Items: Focusing on “The Proper Translation of ‘Kake-soba’”

초록/요약

This study explores what is the proper translation of ‘Kake-soba’ in 우동 한 그릇 (A Bowl of Udon), a translation from Japanese novel 一杯のかけそば. In the article titled “The Proper Translation of ‘Kake-soba’: Foreignization and Domestication of Translation”, Sang Hyun Park and Tomoko Minezaki raised the question as to whether the translated word ‘Udon’ is adequate in many respects, and they proposed ‘온메밀국수’ (onmemilgugsu, warm buckwheat noodles) as a new translation. I conducted a survey of 27 graduate students to see how they respond to onmemilgugsu, the newly proposed term. Students were asked to read the paper carefully and select the most appropriate translation for ‘Kake-soba’ with the reason for their choice. The results of this survey have three key implications. First, when translating a culture specific item in a literary work, translators tend to choose between literary pleasure and cultural stimulation. Second, the changing times and translation trends influence translators’ decision making process. Third, the rendition differs depending on the individual translators’ considerations on particular issues.
