본 연구에서는 우리나라 기업 미시자료를 이용하여 대기업-중소기업 간 하청관계의 실태를 파악하고, 하청관계를 중심으로 한 대기업-중소기업의 경제적 연계성을 실증적으로 분석한다. 본 연구의 분석결과에 의하면 대기업과 하청관계에 있는 중소기업들은 여타 중소기업들에 비해 수익률과 성장률이 낮은 경향이 있지만, 동시에 수익률의 변동성도 작은 것으로 나타난다. 또한 연구개발 투자도 하청 중소기업들에서 더 많이 이루어지는 경향이 있다. 이는 대기업-중소기업 하청관계의 평가를 위해서는 다양한 측면에 대한 종합적인 고려가 이루어질 필요가 있음을 시사한다. 한편 하청 중소기업에 대한 정책자금 지원은 대기업의 수익성을 높이는 것으로 나타나는데, 이는 분수효과 혹은 빨대효과의 존재를 지지하는 결과라고 할 수 있다.

We empirically examine the interrelationship between large firms and SMEs in Korea, with a focus on the subcontracting system. Our analysis indicates that subcontracting SMEs tend to have lower profitability and lower growth compared to non-subcontracting SMEs, while profit variability is lower and R&D investment higher among subcontracting SMEs. These results suggest that Korea’s subcontracting system needs to be viewed with balance. We also find that policy lending to subcontracting SMEs tends to raise profit of large firms within each industry. This suggests possible leakage of benefits away from subcontracting SMEs to large parent firms.
