This study sought to examine the differences between women who experience career interruption and those who maintain employment, during their children’s elementary school entrance period, a time when women’s career interruption is more likely to occur and to find out the factors that affect their career interruption decisions. For this purpose, the data from the 7th-8th waves of the Korean Children’s Panel were used. The main findings were as follows: Women’s educational background, earned income and job satisfaction had a significant impact on the decision of career interruption during the time of her child’s elementary school entrance. In other words, if the educational background was low, if the earned income was low, or if the job satisfaction was low, the likelihood of choosing a career interruption increased. Based on the research results, this study suggests necessity to improve women’s job quality by ensuring an appropriate wage level for women’s labor and enhancing job satisfaction.

본 연구는 여성의 경력단절이 발생하기 쉬운 시기인 ‘자녀의 초등학교 입학 시기’에 경력단절을경험하는 여성들과 취업을 유지하는 여성들 간의 특성적 차이를 알아보고, 경력단절 결정에 영향을미치는 요인을 살펴보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 한국아동패널 7차년도 조사 당시 취업상태인 여성중 자녀가 8차년도에 초등학교로 진학한 여성 총 585명을 대상으로 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 자녀의초등학교 입학 시기 경력단절 결정에는 학력, 여성의 근로소득 및 일자리만족도가 유의미한 영향을미쳤다. 여성의 학력, 근로소득 및 일자리만족도가 각각 낮을수록 자녀의 초등학교 입학 시기에 여성이 경력단절을 선택할 가능성이 높은 것으로 나타났다. 연구결과를 토대로 여성의 노동에 대한적절한 임금 수준의 보장과 일자리 만족도의 제고를 통하여 여성 일자리의 질을 개선할 필요성을제언하였다.
