A Comparison of Psychological Characteristics of Elementary School Student’s Maladaptation in terms of Adler’s Perspective

This study analyzed children’s maladaptation based on Adler's perspective by comparing their psychological states with those of other elementary school students. Participants were 991 4th and 6th grade children in Korea. After placing 373 students into potential school maladaptive risk groups based on self-behavior evaluation, the researchers investigated the levels of their satisfaction, frustration, self-esteem, narcissism and basic psychological needs using self-reported questionnaires. Two-stage cluster analysis and multivariate ANOVA were utilized in order to compare the psychological characteristics of generated groups. A cluster analysis based on misbehavior objectives yielded four clusters in terms of school maladaptive potential risk. The 53 members (14.2%) of the higher action goals group, which had a high level of problematic action targets, showed low basic psychological needs satisfaction, high frustration, low self-esteem, and a high level of narcissism. Also, 110 members (29.5%) of the attention dominant group had high attention action goals, indicating that the levels of basic psychological needs such as satisfaction, self-esteem, and self-love were all high. On the other hand, 108 members (29.0%) of the inadequacy dominant group had high levels of goals for acting out due to feelings of inadequacy, and their levels of basic psychological needs satisfaction, self-esteem, and self-love were all low, but basic psychological needs frustration was high. Finally, 102 respondents (27.3%) were in the lower action goals group, indicating a low level of problematic action goals. Satisfaction and frustration of basic psychological desires were both low. Compared to self-esteem, narcissism was low. Educational and counseling implications for effective intervention based on the results were discussed.
