A Study on the Types of Participants' Participation in Interactive Art -focused on Installation Art-

Participation in interactive art is a deliberate act of viewer for artistic experience. The viewer's actions assist the process of creating a work and create an aesthetic meaning of art experience. This study aims to examine the viewer’s appreciation of the process of participating in the interactive art, and its meaningful actions on viewers. For this study, 12 pieces of installation art with a clear participation of viewers among interactive art works were analyzed. Participation process analysis were divided into action time and appreciation time. And simultaneous participation, and delayed participation were defined. The method of presentation was used to classify the feedback image, the result of participation, into representation, abstraction, and surrogate image. The participation process and participation results were comprehensively analyzed and the analysis result is described below. The first result is that the artist's unique presentation stands out because the simultaneous participation in which viewer's actions and appreciation occur simultaneously and the abstracted feedback image focus on image distortion to implement the experience of programmed mirrors. Second, in the delayed participation, the time of action and appreciation is divided, and the time of appreciation gives viewers a psychological and private time. The viewer is led to have a unique psychological experience through feed backed surrogate image and the image using time difference. The analysis result summary is as follows. In interactive art, viewer’s participation is considered as a potential art experience encouraging viewer’s narcissistic psychology, delayed participation and surrogate image, delayed participation and time-different representative image can be defined as narcissistic participation. Through this study, it is concluded that interactive art produces another meaning in the art experience, and the result of this study can be a basic data to study various creation methods of interactive art and viewer’s art experience.
