통속 윤리의 시대, 유교 사회의 분화 — 최성환의 권선서(勸善書) 출판을 중심으로 —

이 논문은 중인 지식인 최성환의 권선서 출판 활동을 통해 19세기 중후반 조선의 사회적 변동과 이에 따른 당시 지식인들의 윤리적 계몽의 제안을 검토하고자 하는 것이다. 중인 출신 武官이었던 최성환은 다른 중인 문인들과 함께 詩社를 결성해 활동하기도 하고, 불교, 도교 등의 종교 결사에 참여했을 뿐 아니라, 시집, 지도 등 다양한 출판물을 간행한 출판인이기도 하다. 최성환은 유학을 배운 관료 지식인으로서, 無相壇이라는 도교 결사에 참여하며 고종의 후원을 받은 도가 계열 권선서(勸善書) 출판 활동에 참여했으며 그 자신이 중국본 권선서인 󰡔功過格󰡕과 󰡔太上感應篇圖說󰡕의 언해 등을 간행했다. 최성환의 권선서 출판 활동은 당시 조선에서 사회와 개인의 이념적 토대였던 유교적 영향력이 변화하고 있음과 개인의 윤리적 자각과 실천의 기제가 현실화되고 통속화되고 있음을 보여준다. 福善禍淫과 勸善懲惡의 원리를 형이상학적 이념이 아니라 기준에 따라 산술적으로 계산하는 새로운 규약 윤리의 형태로 현실화하려는 방식은 조선에서 성리학적 이념에 기반한 성리학의 수양론과 다른, 현세적이고 통속적인 생활 윤리가 제안되고 있음을 보여준다.

This presentation explores social change in mid-to-late nineteenth-century Chosŏn and the proposals for ethical enlightenment made by contemporary intellectuals—as well as the underlying theoretical structures there of—through the works of the chungin(中人; middle-class) intellectual Choi Sǒng-Hwan(1813-1891), who published many morality books (Kwǒnsǒnsǒ; 勸善書). A military officer (武官) of chungin descent, Choi, with other chungin literati, was involved with poetry groups and religious societies, including Buddhist and Taoist movements, and also produced various kinds of publications, including poetry books and maps. Choi associated with some well-known scholarly middle class intellectuals and also with some high-profile figures from the dominant political faction. As an intellectual with a Confucian education, Choi published various kinds of morality books rooted in this perspective which were intended to morally enlighten the public. Among them were Korean translations of Gongguoge (功過格; The Ledgers of Merit and Demerit), but he also published the Taoist morality book Taishangganyingpian (太上感應篇; The Tract of Taishang on Action and Response). These kinds of efforts by the 19th Chosŏn intellectuals at ethical instruction and enlightenment can be interpreted as developing the self-awareness and the practice of a ‘popular ethics’. The promotion of this popular and worldly ethics, through the publication of morality books, provides some useful insights into one movement of ethical inquiry triggered by the ideological ruptures and concomitant changes of the 19th Chosŏn society.
