초록/요약
인지적 침투에 대한 상이한 정의들이 초래하는 방법론적 문제를 해결하기 위해 결과주의적 접근의 옹호자들은 인지적 침투를 그로 인해 파생되는 결과들에 의해 정의할 것을 제안한다. 결과주의적 정의는 그 정의항에 경험의 정당화 역할 상실과 같은 부정적 인식적 함축을 포함한다. 이 논문에서 주목할 한 가지 비판에 따르면, 경험의 인과적 역사는 경험의 정당화 역할과 무관하기 때문에 인지적 침투는 부정적 인식적 함축에 의해 정의되지 않아야 한다. 이러한 반론과 그에 대한 천현득의 대응을 중심으로 결과주의를 비판적으로 검토하고 결과주의의 문제점을 드러내는 것이 이 논문의 목적이다. 마지막 장에서는 천현득의 대응과 다른 대안적 대응을 제시하고 이를 통해 천현득의 대응이 담고 있는 통찰을 보존할 수 있음을 보일 것이다.

The consequentialist approach to cognitive penetration, proposed as a solution to the methodological problem caused by currently available definitions, defines the phenomenon by its consequences. The consequentialist approach understands cognitive penetration in part by its negative epistemological consequences such as undermining the epistemic role of experience. A possible objection to the consequentialism is that the causal history of an experience is irrelevant for shaping its epistemic role and thus cognitive penetration should not be defined in terms of negative epistemological consequences. By focusing on this objection and Cheon’s response to it, this paper aims at disclosing problems with the consequentialist approach. Toward the end, an alternative response to the objection will be proposed that preserves the insight contained in Cheon’s response.
