A Study on the Effects of the Type of Conflict Avoidance on Marital Stability and Marital Satisfaction: The Moderating Effects of Avoidance Inconsistency with the Spouse

This study focused on conflict avoidance and examined its effects on marital relationships. Considering the inconclusive characteristics of avoidance, the concept was divided into two dimensions: ‘experiential avoidance’ and ‘avoiding negative emotions’. The effects of these two variables on marital stability and marital satisfaction were verified. In addition, ‘inconsistency’, the difference in conflict avoidance between couples, was presented as a moderator variable, and the moderating effect was verified. A survey was conducted on married couples in South Korea who have been married for less than five years, and 200 responses were obtained with the same ratio. As a result of the study, experiential avoidance was found to have a negative effect on marital stability and marital satisfaction. On the other hand, avoiding negative emotions had a positive effect on marital stability and marital satisfaction. The inconsistency of experiential avoidance was found to have a positive effect on the relationship between experiential avoidance and marital stability. The inconsistency of avoiding negative emotions had a negative effect on the relationship between avoiding negative emotions and marital satisfaction. This study empirically verified the negative and positive effects of conflict avoidance, which may contribute to marital conflict management studies.
