This research examines two respective Korean translations of Hilary Mantel’s two linked novels, Wolf Hall (2009) and Bring Up the Bodies (2012), in order to examine how present-tense narratives are translated from English into Korean. While present-tense narratives have become a wide-spread phenomenon in English literature, there are very few works of Korean fiction written in the narrative present and this research aims at carrying out an initial descriptive analysis of how translators have been handling the task in the face of such limitations in resource. This research relies on the narratological theories of Monika Fludernik, Renate Brosch and Carolin Gebauer regarding present-tense narratives to demonstrate the effects of the narrative present in Mantel’s novels. The analysis of the two translations finds that while one translation switches the narrative to past tense and the other maintains the narrative present, the two translations also share strategies that reveal the translators’ unstable handling of the two novels’ internal focalization and free indirect style, which are both closely connected with Mantel’s effective use of the narrative present.

현재시제로 이야기가 전개되는 서사적 현재는 영미권을 비롯한 유럽어권에서 두드러진 현대소설 양식으로 자리 잡은 반면, 한국문학에서는 활발하게 사용되고있지 않는 작법이다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 현저한 차이가 현재시제를 사용하는소설의 국문번역에 어떠한 양상으로 반영되고 있는지를 고찰한다. 분석 대상 텍스트인 영국 작가 힐러리 맨텔의 부커상 수상 연작소설 두 편 『울프 홀』 그리고『튜더스, 앤 불린의 몰락』은 두 명의 다른 번역자의 번역으로 출간되어 현재시제 서사 기법의 번역 양상을 나란히 비교 검토할 기회를 제공한다. 본 연구는서사학자 플루더닉이 자유간접문체의 일환으로 그 효과를 파악하는 서사적 현재관련 이론을 비롯하여, 신진학자 게바우어가 현대 소설에서 현재시제 사용은 단순히 시간적, 문법적 선택이 아닌 서사적 세계 구축의 주요 요소라고 보는 관점을 토대로 맨텔의 작품에 나타나는 서사적 현재의 특성을 상세하게 규명하는 한편, 두 편의 번역본에서 나타나는 구체적 번역양상의 분석을 수행한다. 두 번역본의 비교 결과, 한 편은 시제를 과거시제로 변환하여 번역하였고 한 편에서는 현재시제를 국문본에서도 유지하고 있는 차이가 확인되었으나, 현재시제와 유기적으로 연결된 인칭, 자유간접화법, 구어체 사용 등의 번역에 있어서는 두 편의 번역본 모두 번역전략의 혼선을 보인다는 공통점을 지닌다. 즉 이는 아직 서사적 현재가 국문으로 어떻게 구현되어야 할지에 대한 질문과 실험이 국문소설, 국문번역에서 아직 진행 중이며, 한국의 작가와 번역가 모두에게 중요한 서사미학적 고민과 도전을 안겨주고 있는 것으로 고찰된다.
