THE NEW COVENANT IN JEREMIAH 31:31-34: A RETRIEVAL OF THE PERFECT GOD-MAN RELATIONSHIP

초록/요약

This research examines the New Covenant as a perfect dimension of the Yahweh-Israel relationship in Jeremiah 31:31-34. The main thesis explains that the New Covenant in Jeremiah is not just a new dimension of Yahweh-Israel relationship. It is also a kind of retrieving the original God-man relationship established in Creation. The “relationship” started in the way God created human being. It is successively portrayed in the covenant relationship throughout the Old Testament. The first chapter provides details how the study was done. The second chapter explains how the covenant relationship began. It traces back to how God created human being. The natural bond was severed by human failure, yet it was reestablished by a series of covenant relationships. It is finally reinstituted in Jeremiah’s account in the New Covenant. The third chapter is the exegetical analysis of Jeremiah 31:31-34. The Yahweh-Israel relationship is heading to a new dimension. It is a hope of a perfect relationship. God’s original plan of having an intimate relationship with His image-bearer is finally fulfilled in the New Covenant. He internalizes His law in the people’s heart. So, obedience of God’s law will be possible and the desire to obey will fill the human heart. The fourth chapter gives the moral implications of the historic divine-human covenant relationship to the contemporary Christians. The challenge is to maintain an intimate relationship with God, because this is God’s original plan when He created human being.
