(A) Study of Symbolic Meaning and Aesthetic Awareness of Korean Folk Painting

초록/요약

Folk painting is an old type of painting visibly expressing our people's aesthetic consciousness and emotion. Nation's aesthetic emotion is the aesthetic aspect of life philosophy and emotion habituated in our body through long history, and its realized state as painting style is the very folk painting. Folk painting is emotional expression coming out from a people's thought, and subjective and symbolic expression of the common people's with somewhat gifts, not orthodox painting method, technical expression. This article will look into cultural inheritage having formulated the world of native beauty by candidly reflecting our people's simple life feeling and boldly simplifying then aesthetic awareness. So it will focus on inquiring into our folk painting's characteristic and its symbolic meaning and beauty awareness, and seeking out view of aesthetic value. Folk painting gets universal emotions naturally to come out, and the people's wish to show itself in expressing excluded symbolism. Furthermore, it reflects the people's faith and shows ideal world toward the paradise of present generation rather than next one. The symbolic expression of folk painting made possible communication of feelings the common people have in daily life, and played an intermediate role of a common view of the world basing such communication. These symbolisms were shared by the entire society, but commonly used by a special social class, and changed by individual sensitivity. Whether for decorative need, or enchanting need, folk painting includes many symbolic drawing images, and its own beauty and aesthetic awareness are acquired from symbolic expression, so the symbolisms innate at folk painting can be considered to have important significance. Since dramatizing of styles and formulating of types means folk painting is has rooted in the people, and production activity has not gone beyond the border of common beauty awareness. This article deeply found out that our folk painting had its peculiar art world till it was called "the people's painting", rather than the people's feeling of beauty consciousness and symbolism. In this world, we should newly recognize the fading symbolism and beauty consciousness of Korean folk painting, systematically develop it and progress to-reformed one.
