초록/요약
<설문대할망>은 제주도민들에게 매우 친숙한 존재(이야기)이다. 지금도 제주도민에게 <설문대할망> 이야기는 널리 전승되고 있다. <설문대할망> 이야기는 제주도의 지형지물과 연관된 내용의 자료들이 많이 남아있다. 이는 <설문대할망> 이야기가 원래 지니고 있던 위상이 무엇인지를 가늠할 수 있게 해준다. <설문대할망> 이야기를 향유하던 집단은 세계가 운행되는 원리가 어떤 것인지에 대한 고민을 하였고, 그 사유의 결과가 설문대할망 이야기에 나타난 것이다. 그러나 신격의 위상이 높고, 전승마저 널리 되고 있는 <설문대할망>이 제주도 무당신화에 등장하지 않는 이유가 명확하지 않다. 이에 앞으로의 논문에서는 이러한 궁금증에 따라 <설문대할망>의 신화적 성격을 새롭게 조명하고자 한다. <설문대할망> 이야기의 성격을 명확하게 하기 위해 <설문대할망> 이야기 자료를 조망하여 정리하고, 주요 신화소를 도출했다. <설문대할망> 이야기 자료를 모아서, 자료에서 보이는 공통적인 신화소의 항목을 정리하고, 이 신화소가 어떤 의미를 가지는지를 대략적으로 살핌으로써 <설문대할망> 이야기의 신화적 성격을 새롭게 보기 위한 단초를 마련했다. <설문대할망> 이야기를 인류 문화사적 관점에서 살펴보기 위해 제주도 무당신화인 <천지왕본풀이>와 간략한 비교를 했다. 이를 통해 <설문대할망> 이야기와 <천지왕본풀이> 의 신적 성격이 다름을 확인했다. <설문대할망> 이야기와 <천지왕본풀이>의 가장 핵심적으로 드러나는 차이점은 사제자의 유무이다. <천지왕본풀이>에서는 사제자가 성과 속이 분리된 세상을 이어주는 매개자이지만, <설문대할망>에서는 이러한 매개자가 필요 없음이 중요한 특징점이다. 이것으로 <설문대할망> 이야기와 <천지왕본풀이>의 시대적 차이를 살피고 두 신화가 서로 다른 갈래에 속하는 것을 추론할 수 있었다. 세계적으로 비슷한 시기에 향유되었다고 생각되는 신화들과의 비교분석을 통해 <설문대할망> 이야기의 특징을 확실히 드러냈다. 위대한 여신, 거인신적인 면모가 인류 문화 발달 단계에 따라 점점 사람과 비슷해져가고, 원래 가지고 있던 원초적인 힘을 잃어갔다는 것을 의미한다. 이러한 변모가 세계의 보편적으로 나타나는 현상임을 살피고, 이 시대의 거인신화, 여신신화의 핵심적인 특성을 도출해내었다. 이 시대의 신격과 후대의 신격이 달라지는 현상을 신화 분석을 통해 드러냈다. 이런 신화가 인류의 문화사에서 한 비중을 차지하고 있음을 보이고, 이 시대가 거석문화를 향유했던 시대라고 상정하여 논의를 진행하였다. <설문대할망> 이야기에서는 이러한 거석문화가 한라산과 오름을 창조하는 것으로 나타난다. 이러한 지형지물을 보면서 설문대할망의 신성함을 떠올리고, 숭앙하게 되었을 것이기 때문이다. 설문대할망 이야기는 무당신화와는 다른 신화라는 것을 알았다. 설문대할망 이야기는 일반민중에게 향유되던 일반신화이고 무당신화는 사제자를 통해 구연되는 신화이다. 이러한 현상이 인류 문화사적인 변동과 연관이 있음을 주목하였다.

“Seolmundae Halmang” is a very familiar story to the residents of Jeju Island and is still widely passed down to them. The story of “Seolmundae Halmang” has much data left related to the geographic features of Jeju-do, which help infer the original status of the story of “Seolmundae Halmang”. The group that had been enjoying the story of “Seolmundae Halmang” deeply pondered over the principle of how the world revolves, and the results of such contemplation appeared in the story of “Seolmundae Halmang”. However, it is difficult to recall the reasons why “Seolmundae Halmang”, which has a high divinity status and is even passed down widely, does not appear in the shaman myth of Jeju Island and thus why it has happened needs to be identified. This study seeks to shed a new light on the mythological characteristics of “Seolmundae Halmang” according to such curiosity. To clarify the characteristics of the story of “Seolmundae Halmang”, this study examined the data on the story of “Seolmundae Halmang” and drew the key mythical elements. By organizing the data on the story of “Seolmundae Halmang” and its common mythical elements and by examining what meanings such mythical elements carried, this study established a foundation to newly explore the mythical characteristics of the story of “Seolmundae Halmang”. This study briefly compared “Seolmundae Halmang” with “Cheonjiwangbonpuri”, another shaman myth in Jeju Island, to examine the story of “Seolmundae Halmang” from the perspective of humanity, and confirmed “Seolmundae Halmang” and “Cheonjiwangbonpuri” had different characteristics of god. The most notable difference between the stories of “Seolmundae Halmang” and “Cheonjiwangbonpuri” is the existence of priests. While priests are the bridge connecting the world separated by sacredness and mundane in “Cheonjiwangbonpuri”, they are not needed in “Seolmundae Halmang”, which is an important feature. Through this, the study could examine the time differences between the storeis of “Seolmundae Halmang” and “Cheonjiwangbonpuri” and infer that both myths belonged to different branches. This study clearly revealed the characteristics of the story of “Seolmundae Halmang” through the comparison and analysis with the myths considered to have been enjoyed during the similar period in the world. It means that a great goddess and a giant god aspect have gradually become similar to humans along with the stages of the cultural development of humanity, while losing the primitive power it originally had. This study examined that such change is a universal phenomenon worldwide, drew the key characteristics of the giant myth and goddess myth in this era, and revealed that the divinity of this era and the divinity of the future generation change through the myth analysis. In addition, this study showed that such mythology took up part in the cultural history of humanity, and developed a discussion postulating that this era enjoyed the megalithic culture. In the story of “Seolmundae Halmang”, such the megalithic culture creates Hallasan Mountain and oreum (volcanic cone), because people probably thought about the divinity of “Seolmundae Halmang” and began to revere it it while looking at such geographic features. This study learned that the story of “Seolmundae Halmang” is a different myth from shaman myth, since it is a regular myth enjoyed by the general public while the shaman myth is narrated by priests. This study focused on the fact that such phenomenon is related with the cultural historical changes of humanity.
