Multicultural Motherhood : Experiences of Filipino Marriage Immigrant Women and Influences on their Parenting in Korea

Multiculturalism is still a debatable issue in Korea. In the last two decades, immigrants come to Korea to work, to study, and some take a risk in marriage migration. Based on statistics in 2014, the number of immigrants is more than 1.45 million which is about three percent of Korea’s total population. Since 2000, there is much research about multiculturalism and intercultural marriage in South Korea about the lives of marriage immigrant women from different countries in Southeast Asia. The Philippines is one of the sending countries which reflected that a lot of Filipino women entered as a marriage immigrant. However, in this paper, the focus in motherhood and parenting is highlighted. This paper aims to describe and explain the experiences of Filipino marriage immigrant women in parenting, as well as the factors that can influence it such as acculturation, family relationship, and human capital. Being a mother is already a challenging role, how much more in a foreign land when society already has a hegemonic concept of parenting. Assimilation is questioned as a solution to fit in a host country like Korea. It will also show both the positive and negative influences of immigrant mothers’ assimilation on parenting their children. Furthermore, data triangulation with multiple data gathering methods such as participant observation, in-depth interview, and survey will be used. The researcher as a Filipino immigrant mother has two daughters in elementary school and lives in Korea for four years which ignites the interest to study about the parenting of Filipino immigrant mothers as part of the participant observation. It can also pave a way for an alternative prescription of policies to address both family issues and social integration of multicultural families especially their children. This study is based on my own experience and the experiences of my friends and acquaintances, and other Filipino marriage immigrant women in Korea.
