Is Consumer Cooperative in Korea an Ecofeminist Movement? : In Search for an Alternative to Developmentalist Regime

한국생활협동조합과 에코페미니즘 운동의 연관성 연구: 개발주의 체제의 대안을 찾아서

초록/요약

This thesis critically examines developmentalism in South Korea and evaluates the effectiveness of consemer cooperative movement in Korea (CCMK), which emerged as a resistance to destruction of nature by Park Chung-hee’s developmentalist regime. Furthermore, this research figures out whether CCMK, which started as an environmental movement, can be interpreted as an ecofeminist movement at the same time. In that, I make an attempt to demonstrate whether/how CCMK can be considered a different type of an ecofeminist movement amongst various such movements across the world. This research makes an attempt to give an analysis of the meanings of actual voices, experiences and dynamics of women activists who have participated in the consumer cooperative movement for many years. This analysis has been conducted through a theoretical framework, which has helped capture in a critical way the relationship between theory and practice. Developmentalism is not only the historical event but also the present ideology that is still influential in today democratic society. This thesis wants to acknowledge it whilst making an appeal to the movement to be more critically self-reflective of their practice by utilizing an eco-feminist political lens so that they can be more effective in resisting developmentalism. Key words: developmelntalism, developmentalist regime, consumer cooperative, consumer cooperative movement, ecofeminism, feminism, ecology
