Synthesis and catalytic reactions of nanoparticles formed by electrospray ionization of coinage metals

초록/요약

Noble metals can be ionized by electrochemicalcorrosion and transported by electrospray ionization. Massspectrometry (MS) showed solvated metal ions as the mainionic constituent of the sprayed droplets. Collection of theelectrospray plume on a surface yielded noble metal nano-particles (NPs) under ambient conditions. The NPs werecharacterized by several techniques. Under typical conditions,capped-nanoparticle sizes averaged 2.2 nm for gold and 6.5 nmfor silver. The gold nanoparticles showed high catalytic activityin the reduction of p-nitrophenol by NaBH4. Efficient catalysiswas also observed by simply directing the spray of solvatedAu+onto the surface of an aqueous p-nitrophenol/NaBH4mixture. Organometallic ions were generated by spikingligands into the spray solvent: for example, CuIbipyridinecations dominated the spray during Cu electrocorrosion inacetonitrile containing bipyridine. This organometallic reagentwas shown to be effective in the radical polymerization ofstyrene.
