이 글은 19세기 국문장편소설로 추정되는 유선쌍학록 의 보조인물의 특징을 살피고 그 기능과 의미를 알아보고자 한 것이다. 유선쌍학록 에는 다수의 보조인 물이 등장하며, 특히 상당수의 인물은 신분이 낮은 이들로 중심 가문 밖에서 주변 부적 삶을 살아가는 이들이다. 이들은 서사에서 지속적으로 그리고 활발히 등장해 스스로 사건을 판단하고 주도함으로써 중심인물들을 조력하는 행위를 보여준다. 또한 이들을 제시함에 있어 서사는 중심인물을 돕는 행위만을 강조하는 것이 아니라 보조인물들의 삶의 정황과 순간순간 그들의 감정을 함께 제시해주는 특징을 보인다. 이 같은 유선쌍학록 의 보조인물 설정과 활용의 특징은 이 작품의 서사를 보다 다채롭고 개연성 높게 만들어주며, 사건들과 중심 가문의 상황을 현실적으로 드러내게 하는 데 기여한다. 이와 함께 보조인물들을 기능적 인물로만 제시하는 것이 아니라 그 삶의 국면과 내면을 함께 그려냄으로써 살아있는 인물로 보이도록 하며, 특히 주변부의 삶에 대한 관심을 보여준다는 점에서 이 작품이 인간에 대한 보다 확대된 이해를 갖고 있음을 확인하게 한다.

This research paper is to analyze the characteristics of the assistant characters appearing in <Yuseon-ssang-hwa-rok> assumed as a long-length novel in the Korean language of 19th century, and to examine the functions and meanings. In <Yuseon-ssang-hwa-rok>, numerous assistant characters appear. Especially, most of them are people of the low positions conducting an auxiliary life out of the main household. Those assistant characters steadily and frequently appear in this narrative, playing the assistant roles of central characters by spontaneously taking initiative to judge any event. In the process of introducing those people, this narrative assumes a characteristic that not only emphasizes their behaviors that assist central character but also describes the situations of their lives and emotions they feel every moment. The features of <Yuseon-ssang-hwa-rok> presenting and using assistant characters makes a contribution to making the narrative of this work become more diverse and offer a high probability as well as to reflecting the situations of events and main households practically. In addition, this work evidences that it has a more extensive understanding for human beings in the sense that it shows a concern for the lives of the assistant characters, above all, by not just describing those characters as functional ones but also portraying their external and internal lives so that they could be seen as the real existing characters.
