To Give New Objects:The Information Structure Effect on Dative Construction in Mandarin Chinese

초록/요약

This paper explores the role of information structure in word order alternations of dative construction in Mandarin Chinese. Unlike most previous analyses, the current research examines all six possible syntactic variants simultaneously and offers a consistent account for all of them using two kinds of information structural notions, i.e. Givenness and Prominence. Using both corpus data and sentence rating survey data, it has shown that while discourse Givenness plays an important role in dative alternation, New information often precedes Given information, contrary to some previous analyses, and that it is because the preverbal position encodes Prominent information regardless of Givenness or Newness. Furthermore, it has been found that the presence or absence of co-verb Gei is closely related with the pronominality of the recipient IO argument. Availability of multiple structural options for dative construction in Chinese makes it possible to align syntactic structure with information structure to a greater extent.
