A Study of Knowledge, Attitude and Practices in Geriatric Nursing of General Hospital

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare Emergency Department (ED) and ward nurses' knowledge, attitude and practices in geriatric nursing. Method: The subjects were ED and ward nurses working at three general hospital in Seoul. The research instruments was translated, modified and used as part of the older patients in acute care survey. Result: In terms of knowledge about geriatric nursing, ED nurses were more knowledgeable than ward nurses in a knowledge item that the joints of older patients are stiff(t=-2.353, p=.020). In terms of attitude about geriatric nursing, ED nurses agreed more than ward nurses that older patients could make decisions about their treatment(t=-1.991, p=.049). ED nursed agreed more than ward nurses that too many older patients receive life-sustaining treatments(t=-2.162, p=.032). In terms of practice about geriatric nursing, ward nurses thought it was more difficult than ED nurses to care older patients(t=-1.983, p=.049) and spent more time to prepare and older patients for discharge(t=-2.992, p=.003). In addition, there were differences in other 9 items between ED and ward nurses. Conclusion: Current findings support a need to develop strategies for ED nurses to raise the knowledge, attitudes and practices of geriatric nursing.
