우리 시대를 규정하는 근원적인 물음은 분단과 통일이다. 시대의 물음인 분단과 통일을 철학의 문제로서 사유한 사람의 하나로 함석헌을 들수 있다. 그는 이 문제를 현실 정치라는 문맥을 넘어 가능한 한 가장 깊은 근거와 넓은 지평에서 정신적으로 이해하고자 했다. 그는 한반도의분단은 미·소를 정점으로 하는 근대 국가의 모순, 즉 경쟁과 폭력을 통해자국의 이익을 최우선시하는 국가주의의 모순의 산물이라고 보았다. 따라서 그 극복 역시 근대 국가 체제를 극복함으로써만 가능하다고 보았다. 즉 그는 한반도의 분단과 통일을 도덕의 최종 심급이 국민 국가에서인류 전체로 전환되는 거대한 세계사적 전환과 맞물려있는 사건으로 보았던 것이다. 이 난제를 해결하기 위해 함석헌은 ‘전체’의 지평을 인류로 확대하는한편, ‘자아’를 국경이나 사이비 전체로부터 해방시켜 인간의 주체성을극대화했다. 그리고 타자의 고통에 응답하는 사랑을 하나 되는 세계를개방해 가는 정치의 원리로 정립시켰다. 이를 통해 그는 한반도를 자기내적 분열에서 구해내어 온전한 주체로 정립하는 길을 열고, 세계 인류를 위해서는 고난을 의욕 하는 사랑을 통해 열리는 새로운 정신의 지평을 열고자 한 것이다.

The fundamental questions that define our times are division and unification. Hahm Seok-Hun can be cited as one of the people who pondered the question of division and unification. He sought to mentally understand the issue beyond the context of realpolitik and based on the deepest possible grounds and the widest horizon possible. He saw the division of the Korean Peninsula as a product of the contradiction of modern sovereign states, which puts the interests of each nation first through competition and violence. Therefore, Hahm believed that overcoming such divisions as Korea had suffered would only be possible by overcoming the modern state system. In other words, he saw the division of the Korean Peninsula and unification as an event that coincided with a huge shift in world history from one based on nation-states to one based on the needs of the entire human race. To address this difficult task, Hahm Suk-hun boldly expanded the spectrum of the whole beyond a nation-state, to include the entire human family. Moreover, he stated that the ‘self’ must be freed from allegiance to a nation-state or any misrepresentation the impeded the referring of oneself to the whole of humanity, thereby maximizing human’s sovereignty Also, he established the principle of politics that prioritizes response to the pain of others. Through this approach, he wanted to open the way to save the Korean Peninsula from its internal division and establish itself as an intact entity. It also opened a new horizon of spirit through love, as an ambition for humanity as a whole.
