섬유의 물성과 조형원리에 기초한 키네틱아트 사례 연구

키네틱아트는 예술과 테크놀로지의 결합을 통해 유동적이며 역동적인 움직임을 지향하는 시간예술이다. 21세기 키네틱아트에서 섬유의 활용 양상을 살펴봄으로써 기계장치의 차가움, 단순한 동작의 지루함, 복잡한 동작의 제작비용이나 관리의 어려움 등과 같은 전형적인 문제점을 보완하는 하나의 방안으로서 섬유의 재료적 가치를 확인하고 접근 가능한 미래를 묻는 것이 연구의 주요목적이다. 그와 같은 목표에 도달하기 위한 방법으로 이론탐구와 섬유를 매체로 움직임을 구현한 작품 사례의 비교분석을 병행한다. 2장에서 관련 문헌을 바탕으로 키네틱아트의 초기 미술사적 배경과 기초적인 조형원리, 특성, 재료를 먼저 소략하여 개진한다. 이어서 본고의 핵심인 3장에서는 섬유의 유연한 물성에 의한움직임을 개념적 핵심으로 취한 사례를 목적표집 방식으로 수집하여 유형 분류의 체계를 세우고 나서, 열 가지 범례를 추출하여 조형적 특성을 분석할 것이다. 당대의 주류는 큰 폭의 원단에 인간 동력이나자연력을 가한 아날로그 형식, 섬유조형 프로세스에 의해 구축된 구조를 활용하는 디지털 형식, 두 가지로 집약된다. 관객참여나 공기역학에 의존하는 아날로그 형식이 기계장치의 단순한 동작에 따라 구조적 변이를 전개하는 디지털 형식에 비해 예측불허의 변화무쌍한 움직임을 창출한다. 유체의 움직임을 모방해서 실현하는 촉매제인 섬유는 열려진 공간을 지향하고 역동성, 시간성, 비물질성, 계산된 우연성, 상호작용성을 추구하는 키네틱아트의 본질을 더욱 종합적이고 직설적으로 강화한다. 또한 딱딱함과 부드러움, 차가움과 따뜻함, 무거움과 가벼움과 같은 양극을 중화시키는 역할을 담당한다. 당대의 혁신적인 테크놀로지와 결합된 섬유 신소재의 활용뿐 아니라, 구조적 측면에서 움직임을 수용하여변화를 창출하게 만드는 틈새와 주름을 중심으로 설계한 섬유조형을 통해 키네틱아트에서 섬유의 적용 범주가 더욱 넓게 확장되길 기대한다.

Kinetic art is time-based that pursues fluid and dynamic movements by combining art and technology. In the course of inspecting into the current usage of fiber in kinetic art, the main objective of the paper is to investigate the materialistic value of cloth as a mean to compliment typical problems such as the coldness of machinery, the tediousness of basic movements, the high maintenance and cost of complex movements to search for an approachable future. The method adopted to achieve these goals involves theoretical studies and comparative analyses of kinetic objects with different forms of movements imbedded in their components. Chapter 2 explains the early art historical background, principals and characteristics of kinetic art in general. Chapter 3 as the core of the paper examines 10 selected artworks under a categorized system established after collecting examples of choreographed liquidity of cloth in kinetic art of our time. The two distinguished mainstreams are the analog format of yardages activated by natural or human power and the digital format of structural transitions provided by the process of fiber construction. The previous relying on the viewer’s participations or aerodynamic property produces more unpredictable movements than the later unfolding structural variations controlled by machinery. Textile mimicking the movements of fluid reinforces the essence of kinetic art such as openness, dynamism, time-oriented operation, immateriality, calculated happening and interactivity in a comprehensive and straightforward way. It plays a role in neutralizing binary oppositions like hardness and softness, coldness and warmth, and heaviness and lightness. It is expected the usage of fiber to be expanded through adapting new fiber materials combined with innovative technologies of the time, as well as constructed fibers containing openings or pleats that accommodates structural transitions.
