Factors Promoting and Debilitating College Students’ Intercultural Interaction in Educational Setting

초록/요약

The increase of international students in Korean university campuses is providing more opportunities for Korean students to be exposed to new cultures. Then, are there enough intercultural interactions among university students to promote their intercultural understanding? Despite a series of reports saying that there is lack of intercultural interaction between international and domestic students, studies providing intuitions to promote intercultural interactions in Korean universities are still not enough. This study aims to explore university students’ intercultural interaction on campus and identify what facilitate or debilitate intercultural interactions between international and Korean students. Two hundred international and Korean students participated in an online survey; and 83 of them participated in semi-structured interviews. The interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using NVIVO starter. More than 200 initial codes were developed, grouped, and finally categorized through bottom-up approach. The results of this study will provide insights for university administrators, professors, and students to facilitate intercultural competence by promoting intercultural interactions between international and Korean students.
