영상 제작을 통한 과학기술관련 사회쟁점(SSI) 수업이 중학생의 미디어 리터러시와 SSI 이해에 미치는 효과

초록/요약

본 연구의 목적은 영상 제작을 통한 과학기술관련 사회쟁점(이하 SSI) 수업이 중학생의 미디어 리터러시 및 SSI에 대한 이해에 미치는 효과를 탐색하는 것이다. 이를 위해 중학교 3학년 과학 ‘과학과 인류 문명’ 단원과 관련된 SSI 주제를 탐색하고 이에 대한 영상을 제작하는 수업을 개발하였으며, 총 124명의 학생들이 본 연구에 참여하였다. 학생들은 과학기술분야 6가지(신재생 에너지, 자율주행, CCTV, 플라스틱의 활용, 유전자 조작, 식품 첨가물) 중 조별로 하나의 주제를 선택하여 자유탐구 형식으로 진행하였으며, 최종적으로 SSI에 대한 조의 입장을 전달하기 위한 영상을 제작하였다. 본 연구에서는 영상제작 활동을 통한 SSI 수업의 효과를 탐색하기 위해 참여 학생에게 수업 전과 후에 미디어 리터러시를 측정하는 검사지를 배부하였으며, 연구에 참여한 학생 중 24명을 선정하여 영상 제작을 통해 학생들의 SSI에 대한 이해가 어떻게 변화했는지 면담을 통해 알아보았다. 연구 결과, 영상 제작을 통한 SSI 수업에 참여한 학생들은 미디어 리터러시의 능력 영역(비판적 이해, 활용과 표현)과 시민성 영역(관용성, 참여성, 공공성) 모두에서 통계적으로 유의하게 향상된 것으로 나타났다. 면담 결과에서도 학생들은 영상 제작을 통한 SSI 수업의 효과에 대해 긍정적으로 인식하였으며, 특히 미디어 자료를 탐색하면서 SSI를 바라보는 입장과 가치관이 매우 다양할 수 있다는 것을 체감하였다. 또한 미디어를 제작하는 과정에서 미디어에 자신의 입장과 의도를 반영해야함을 깨닫고 SSI에 대한 시청자들의 관심과 실천을 촉구하는 메시지를 담기도 하였으며, 시청자에게 안내하는 것뿐만 아니라 본인 또한 실생활에서 행동에 옮기는 계기가 되었다고 응답하였다.

초록/요약

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of SSI instruction with video production on middle school students’ media literacy and understanding of SSI. To achieve the goal, we designed and implemented SSI instruction on the unit of ’Science and Human Civilizations’, and one hundred twenty-four 9th grade students participated in this SSI program. Students in each group selected one topic of science and technology (renewable energy, autonomous driving, CCTV, plastic use, genome editing, food additives) and conducted their own inquiry project on the societal issues caused by such technologies. Then, students were asked to create a video clip, representing their understanding and value position on the issue. We distributed the questionnaires to examine students’ media literacy before and after the instruction, and interviewed 24 students who voluntarily shared their experiences about this SSI program. Results indicated that participating students showed statistically significant improvement in all two factors (i.e. competence and citizenship) of media literacy. The interview data also supported that students recognized the diversity of stakeholders and values surrounding SSIs, while exploring the media. Additionally, the students answered after realizing the importance of conveying their own messages in video production, they began to take actions by themselves, on top of guiding potential audiences to resolve the SSIs in their daily lives.
