본 연구는 미술 영재교육을 받은 예술가가 자신의 직업을 선택하고 직업을 인식하는데 있어 정체성이 매우 중요하게 작용한다는 가설에서 착수되었다. 질적 연구 방법을 이용한 본 연구는 한 예술가의 심층 면담을 통해 정체성을 형성하는 과정을 살펴보았다. 정보 제공자는 예술적인 가정환경, 미술 교사의 권유, 그리고 자신의 흥미로 미술관련 진로를 결정하고 학원과 예술영재교육기관인 중고등학교를 다니면서 미술대학에 진학했다. 이후, 예술가 집단 안에서 그들의 가치와 규범을 내면화하고 교류하면서 예술가로서 전문성을 갖추게 되었다. 정보 제공자는 자신을 전문 예술가로 생각하고 있었으며, 예술가라는 정체성을 확고하게 가지고 있었다. 그가 이런 정체성을 가지게 된 배경에는 예술적인 가정 환경과 가족의 지지가 있었으며, 기대지평 이론이 포괄하는 “예술적 재능의 발견,” “장기적인 예술교육과 기본기가 된 전공 스킬,” “예술적인 환경에 노출,” “의미 있는 미적 경험과 교육적 경험,” “예술적으로 실력이 있음”을 자기 스스로 그리고 “의미 있는 타자”로부터 인정을 받으면서 구축해온 것이다. 예술가는 이러한 다양한 사회적 요인들과 상호작용하며 예술가로 성장했다. 또한 예술가로서의 정체성을 구축하기 위한 노력으로 “삶이 된 예술, 삶의 의미지평을 넓힌 예술”에 대해 언급하였다. 예술가라는 직업으로서 “예술을 삶과 일치”시키며, “체화된 창작활동”을 하고 있었다. 또한 창작에 있어 사고의 틀을 깨기 위한 노력을 하였으며, 미래에 대한 불확실성 안에서도 “진정성 있는 긴 호흡의 창작활동”을 통해 자신의 정체성을 구축하고 있었다.

Identity plays a very important role in selecting a career and recognizing a job for a gifted and accomplished gifted artist who received gifted art education. This study examines the process of an artist's identity formation through the story of an artist. Informant in the study, who regarded herself as professional artist and had firm identity as artist, decided on art-related career paths based on her artistic family environments, art teachers’ recommendations, and her own interests and went on to art college while attending academy and secondary school, an institution of gifted art education. Afterwards, she became specialized as artist by internalizing and exchanging her values and norms within the artist group . The background of artist's identity was an artistic family environment, support from artist's family, “discovery of artistic talent,” “a long-term arts education and basic skills,” “exposure to artistic environment,” “meaningful aesthetic experiences and educational experiences,” and “artistic competency,” which has increased through recognition from herself and “the meaningful other.” Artists grow into their roles by interacting with these various social factors. In addition, she mentioned, “art that became life, art that expanded the horizon of meaning of life” as an effort to establish an artist’s identity. As an artist, she “matches art with life” and engages in “embodied creative activities.” In addition, she seeks to breaktheframeofthinkingincreation and builds her own identity through creative activities in pursuit of a long-held hope despite uncertainty about the future.
