초록/요약
일제 치하 한국의 뛰어난 기독 여성들은 민족생존을 꿈꾸며 기독교에 몰두하거나, 여성교육에 전념하거나, 혹은 직접 독립운동에 가담했다. 그러나 일제 식민지가 장기화되며 이들 중 일부는 일제에 전향하여 식민정책을 적극 옹호했다. 그럼에도 불구하고 기독교 공동체 혹은 특정 공동체에서 이들은 여전히 위대한 인물로만 기억된다. 이들 기독 여성조상의 다양한 모습을 함께 기억할 수는 없을까? 이 글은 위의 질문에서 시작해 유대-기독교에서 영웅시하는 여성조상 라합을 다양한 모습으로 기억하는 방법을 탐구했다. 라합은 유대-기독교경전 여호수아서에 나오는 인물로 유대의 가나안 정착을 결정적으로 도왔다. 그래서 유대-기독교에서 전통적으로 라합을 위대한 인물로 칭송했다. 이 글에서는 유대-기독교의 전통 관점 뿐 아니라 여성신학적 관점, 탈식민관점에서 라합의 이미지를 다양하게 기억했다. 즉, 라합을 유대-기독교의 위대한 인물로서뿐 아니라 가부장제 사회에서 남성을 능가한 여성, 민중해방에 공헌한 여성 민중 혁명가, 또 현실에 존재해서는 안되는 식민화된 여성으로도 기억했다. 기억하는 것은 죽은 자가 아니라 산 자를 위한 것이다. 위대한 기독 여성조상을 기억하고 흠모하며, 사실상 이들은 현대 기독여성 내면의 일부가 되었다. 따라서 이들을 다양한 각도에서 기억하는 것은 우리 내면의 복잡하고 애매한 부분도 우리의 일부로 받아들이고자 하는 것이다. 또 우리 내면에 자리 잡은 정신적 유산을 깊이 성찰하고 애도하며 우리의 약함 속에서도 동일한 문제를 반복하지 않기 위한 것이다.

2019 marks the 100th anniversary of the March 1 Independence Movement in Korea. For the memory of the movement, this paper intended to re-consider one dominant image of some heroic Korean Christian female ancestors. The women had actively participated in pro-Japanese activities during the Japanese colonization. Being very faithful Christians, however, they were mainly remembered as the most respectable. This paper raised questions of such an understanding through the exploration of various images of Rahab in Joshua of the Old Testament. Taking sides with Israeli people, Rahah resulted in the complete destruction of her own Canaanite people. Thus, Jewish-Christian traditions have long remembered Rahab as a great heroin. Rahab has saved Israel and Christianity. However, Rahab is differently seen in current Christian feminist and post-colonial communities. Rahab is seen as a female who surpassed males in a patriarchal society, and a revolutionary prostitute who helped social outcasts and minjung. Rahab is even read as a traitor who had abandoned his own people, a terrible figure who should not exist, or a fictional woman in an empire-discourse. This suggests new possibilities to understand the Korean Christian female ancestors who actively cooperated with Japanese colonization even from the perspective of Christianity.
