A Study Transactional Relationships and Longitudinal Effects Between Parents-Children Language/Physical Play Activity and Children’s Vocabulary Development

Objectives: This study explored the longitudinal effectiveness of parents-children language/physicalplay activity on later children’s vocabulary development. Methods: Three waves of panel data from the Millennium Cohort Study in the United Kingdom wereanalyzed in this study. A total of 9,420 three-year-old (T1), five-year-old (T2) and eleven-year-oldchildren (T3) and their parents. Results: First, Parents-children language/physical play activity and children vocabulary developmentshowed stability. Second, T1 and T2 parent-children language activity had effects on T2 and T3 childrenvocabulary development. Considering child effects, parents-children language activity was influenced bychildren vocabulary development. Third, T1 and T2 mother-children physical play activity had effects onT2 and T3 children vocabulary development. The father-children physical play activity (T2) had only effecton children vocabulary development (T3). For child effects, father-children physical activity wasinfluenced by children vocabulary development only. Conclusion: This study identified the child effects as well as parent effects supporting thetransactional model. Findings of this study also stressed the differences between the effects offathers and mother involvement. Furthermore, they can be used as a source in developing policiesfor children with delayed language development and their parents.
