이 연구는 ‘한국아동·청소년패널조사’ 자료를 사용하여 고교유형이 고3 학생의 학업성취도에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 첫째, 학업성취도를 제고하는 여러 요인들을 통제한 후 고교유형이 학업성취도에 영향을 미치는지를 분석하였다. 특히 중3 학업성취도를 통제한 후에 고교유형의 효과가 나타나는지에 주목하였다. 둘째, 고교유형이 고3 학생의 학업성취도에 영향을 미치는 다른 요인들의 효과를 유의하게 강화하거나 약화시키는지를 분석하였다. 특히 부모의 사회경제적 지위가 고3 학생의 학업성취도에 미치는 영향을 고교유형이 유의하게 강화하는지에 초점을 맞추었다. 분석결과에 따르면, 첫째, 특목고와 자사고가 고3의 학업성취도에 미치는 영향은 중3 학업성취도를 통제했을 때 사라졌다. 또한 중3 학업성취도는 어떠한 변수보다도 고3 학생의 학업성취도에 더 큰 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 고교유형과 가구소득의 상호작용이 나타났다. 즉 특목고와 자사고에서 가구소득이 고3 학생의 학업성취도를 높였다. 결국 고교유형은 직접적으로 고3 학생의 학업성취도에 유의한 영향을 미치지는 않았지만, 고교유형은 간접적으로 가구소득이 고3 학생의 학업성취도를 높이는 데 영향을 미쳐, 교육불평등을 강화했다.

This study analyzed the effects of high school type on high school seniors’ academic achievement, using data from the Korean Children & Youth Panel Survey. First, this study investigated whether high school type affects high school seniors’ academic achievement, when various control variables are considered. In particular, the study focused on the effects of high school type when middle school third-year academic achievement is controlled for. Second, the researchers analyzed whether high school type would significantly increase the effects of other factors influencing high school seniors’ academic achievement, focusing on parents’ socioeconomic status among control factors. Findings of this study are as follows. First, the effects of high school type were negated when middle school third-year academic achievement was controlled for. In addition, middle school third-year academic achievement was found to be the most critical factor in increasing high school seniors’ academic achievement. Second, findings showed the existence of the interaction effects between high school type and household income. Specifically, household income positively impacted high school seniors’ academic achievement in special-purpose and autonomous private high schools. Overall, special-purpose and autonomous private high schools did not positively impact high school seniors’ academic achievement directly. Rather, those schools increased the effects of household income on students’ academic achievement, intensifying inequalities in education.
