초록/요약
본고는 실천 추론과 실천 의논에서 불가피한 난문인 무한 후퇴와 존재-당위 문제를 다룰 수 있는 레토릭의 가능성을 제시함을 목적으로 한다. 무한 후퇴란 어떤 주장을 보장하려면 승낙된 여건 명제가 끊임없이 요구된다는 문제이다. 존재-당위 문제란 규범적인 명제의 도출이 기술적인 명제로부터는 불가능하다는 문제이다. Fairclough, I. and Fairclough, N.(2012b)는 이러한 문제를 해소한 것으로 보인다. 그러나 그들의 주장이 유효한 것은 현실 세계에서 규범이 다스리는 영역에 한정되어 있다. 실천 추론과 실천 의논에서 기능하는 감정의 역할은 그들이 충분히 고려하지 않는 영역이며, 그것이 바로 본고가 다루려는 부분이다. 본고는 오카쿠라텐신의 저작인 동양의 각성을 사례로 고찰을 시도한다. 동양의 각성에서 오카쿠라가 도모하는 것은 서구열강 국가들에 대한 저항을 호소하는 자기의 주장에 대해 동양의 백성들에게 동의를 얻는 것이다. 그러한 장면에서 동양이 존중을 받을 만한 가치가 있다는 각성을 일으키는데 파토스, 즉 감정에 대한 호소가 적당한 역할을 하는 것이 확인된다. 설득에서의 이러한 파토스의 역할은 동양의 각성에서는 실천 추론과 실천 의논에서의 무한 후퇴와 존재-당위 문제를 파토스가 해소시킨다고 볼 수 있다. 이는 레토릭이 띠는 환기성, 즉 잠재하는 생각, 의식을 불러일으키는 특성에 기인한다고 할 수 있다.

This study aims to demonstrate the possibility of rhetoric to deal with two inevitable conundrums in practical reasoning and practical argumentation, the infinite regress problem, and the “Is-Ought” problem. The infinite regress is a problem of an incessant requirement for conceded premises to secure a claim. The “Is-Ought” problem is the alleged impossibility to deduce a prescriptive statement from a descriptive statement. Fairclough, I. and Fairclough, N. (2012b) appear to succeed in disposing of those complications, but their claim is only valid in the realm of social reality that is regulated by normative commitment. The function of emotions in practical reasoning and argumentation is one of such domains that they do not pay due attention to, and that is what this study works on. Consideration of The Awakening of the East written by Okakura Tenshin(1863-1913), where Okakura attempts to win Asian people’s adherence to an idea of renitency against Western powers in the early twentieth century, shows that pathos, or the appeal to emotions plays an appropriate role to help Asian people to approve of an idea that Asia is worthy of being appreciated. This contribution of pathos to persuasion means that pathos makes both practical reasoning and practical argumentation immune to the two enigmas in the case of The Awakening of the East as practical argumentation. This resolution can be attributed to a property of rhetoric of being evocative.
