Study on Trends in Linguistics-based Translation Research in China

China has developed rich thoughts on translation as the nation takes pride in its long history of translation. With explosively increasing demand for translation since the 1980s, the country has explored various translation theories. In particular, since translation theories were introduced from aborad, China has attempted at new methodologies of translation studies, including linguistics-based translation research, followed by culturalism, descriptivism, and functionalism. Of these methodologies, approach to translation issues from the perspective of linguistics has been adopted most actively. In this context, this study aims to examine trends in linguistics-based translation research in China over the last decade from 2010 to 2019 by selecting three essential journals from China’s academic journals related to translation and interpretation. To this end, first, a new framework of classification is presented for this study by revising the existing framework of classification for linguistics-based research to suit translation studies. Second, the study looks into the research portion of individually classified items through statistical analysis of research topics, genres, and target languages of individual papers by selecting China’s leading journals of translation and interpretation studies, namely, Chinese Translators’ Journal, Shanghai Journal of Translators, and Chinese Science and Technology Translators Journal. Third, the study draws out the implications of the research findings based on quantitative analysis to describe trends in linguistics-based translation research in China.
