본 연구는 논증 이론에 바탕을 두고 오카쿠라텐신 저 『동양의 각성』을 사례로 논증(argumentation)에서의 합리성과 유효성 간의 경합에 대하여 고찰한다. 논증이란 논자가 주장에 대한 청중의 동의를 강화시키려 하는 언어에 의한 행위이며, 논증에서의 합리성과 유효성은 논증을 통하여 실현된다. 논증에서 합리성과 유효성 간에 균형이 잘 잡히지 않을 경우가 생길 수 있고 감정에 대한 호소는 바로 그에 속하는 언설이다. 그러나 『동양의 각성』을 대상으로 수사학적 논증 (rhetorical argumentation)의 시각으로 검토해 본 결과 감정에 대한 호소는 합리성에 지원받은 유효성이 논증에서 이루어짐이 시사된다. 이는 에토스와 파토스의 영역까지 포괄하고 가치의 다원성을 인정한다는 수사학적 논증의 인간 본질에 대한 친화성에 귀인된다고 볼 수 있다.

Based on argumentation theories, this study attempts a consideration of competitiveness between reasonableness and effectiveness in argumentation by taking as an example Okakura Tenshin (1863-1913)’s The Awakening of the East. The reasonableness and effectiveness are both supposed to be realized through argumentation, that is, a discursive activity whereby an arguer increases an audience’s adherence to claims being advanced. Either of those two vectors is presumably overridden by the other; the appeal to emotions is the occurrence of this disequilibrium. The examination of The Awakening of the East in the light of the rhetorical perspective, however, affirms the possibility that the appeal to emotions contributes to the realization of the effectiveness aided by the reasonableness in argumentation. This synergy is substantially attributed to the affinity of rhetorical argumentation for human nature, namely its inclusion of the range of ethos and pathos into argumentation, and acknowledgment of value pluralism.
