A study on the rhetorical strategy of correction-reformulation

초록/요약

This paper analyses the “correction-reformulation” structure of [starting utterance (A) - correction mark (X) - reformulating utterance (B)]. As correction marks, we analyse the negative mark (B not A) and the comparative mark (B rather than A). This activity has the characteristic of meta-enunciation, which retrospectively adopts the starting utterance (A) during an enunciation. The comparative mark “B rather than A” displays the specific enunciative aspect of “modalisation autonymique”. The conflict and negotiation between the viewpoints revealed through the starting and reformulating utterances display interesting aspects in terms of polyphony and dialogism. Instead of presenting only appropriate expressions, the method of summoning incorrect viewpoints and employing a series of processes in order to correct them in the utterance function allows the speaker to build the impression that she has considered various viewpoints with care, while at the same time demonstrating the validity of an assertion. The employment and prioritization of persuasion has the effect of pre-empting an opponent's rebuttal in advance.
