본 연구는 화산섬 환경 하에서 돌문화경관을 이룬 제주도와 하와이 제도가 상이한 사회･정치적 맥락에서 독특한 전통 농업 및 어업 경관을 형성한 과정을 살펴보고 두 지역 간 경관요소별 특색을 비교 고찰하였다. 그 결과 두 지역의 돌문화경관을 구성하는 석조유산들은 모두 현무암을 이용하였다는 점에서 재료적 유사성을 지니는 것으로 나타났으며 문화유산 간 형태 및 기능적 유사성도 확인되었다. 그러나 두 지역 간 상이한 기후 및 지형 환경으로 인한 유산별 세부 설치구조와 공간분포 차이, 돌문화경관이 발달하게 된 사회･정치적 배경과 그러한 맥락 속에서 유산의 운용방식 및 활용양상 차이가 나타났다. 연구 결과 하와이의 돌문화경관을 이루는 유산들은 최근에 보존의 필요성을 부각시키는 움직임은 있으나 대부분 접근성이 매우 낮고 개발과 방치로 소실된 경우가 많았으며, 이들을 활용한 관광자원화나 상품화도 매우 미흡한 것으로 나타났다. 반면 제주도의 경우 특유의 돌문화경관에 대한 관심이 점차 높아지면서 이를 활용한 부가가치 창출과 지속가능한 보전을 위한 노력이 활발히 이루어지고 있는 것으로 나타났다.

The purpose of this study is to examine how Jeju Island and Hawaii Islands, which have stone culture landscape under the similar natural environment of volcanic island, formed unique traditional stone landscape in different socio-political contexts and compare characteristics of landscape elements. We analyze physical environment and compared the stone cultural landscape elements of each island through literature review and field surveys. The results show that the stone heritage that make up the stone cultural landscape of both regions had material similarities in that they used basalt rock, and the morphological and functional similarities between cultural heritages were also identified. However, there are differences in detailed structures and spatial distribution of facilities due to the different climate and topographical environment, as well as differences in operating methods and the use of heritage under different social and political context between the two regions. Studies have shown that most of Hawaii's stone cultural heritage sites, although there is a movement for conservation and practical use of stone heritage recently, are inaccessible and often lost due to development and negligence, and that tourist resource or commercialization using them is very poor. On the other hand, in Jeju Island a growing interest in its unique stone cultural landscape has led to brisk efforts to create value-added products and achieve sustainable conservation.
