This preliminary study on the creative performance of secretaries examined whether secretaries perform tasks creatively and, if yes, what those performing tasks are. In addition, the motivational factors affecting the creative performance of secretaries were analyzed. Previous studies showed that individual factors and environmental factors affect the creative performance of secretaries. This study investigated those previously proven influencing factors and any other influencing factors according to the job characteristics of secretaries. This study conducted a critical incident technique interview on 11 incumbent secretaries with more than two years of experience. All participants agreed that they perform creative tasks. The creative tasks performed by the secretary were classified mainly as individual level, routine level, and professional level. In addition, the motivation of the creative performance of secretaries was defined by personal and external factors. The personal factors included cognitive ability, intrinsic motivation, personality, and changes surrounding the individual's environment. This study could be used as a basis for subsequent quantitative research and developing an environment in which secretaries can perform creative tasks more actively, recognizing that secretaries are influenced by personal and external factors.
