A Study on the Expression Method of Stereoscopic Perception in 2D VR Animation Using After Effects

초록/요약

The VR contents of nowadays can be classified in two types, ‘cinematic virtual reality’ and ‘game-based virtual reality.’ The VR contents based on 3D animation have been produced abundantly because both of these two types can be applied to 3D animation, whereas it is not easy to find the VR contents based on 2D animation. A review of previous studies on 2D graphic production methods in VR environment shows that mainly the following two approaches are adopted; one is to directly draw pictures on cube map or spherical map panoramic images for VR projection using Photoshop or special programs such as Sketch 360, and the other is to create 3D models with 2D look and then perform real-time rendering using a game engine. For the former approach, we could hardly find an attempt to create stereoscopic animation. The present study suggests a method to produce 2D stereoscopic VR animation using After Effects. Specifically, we propose a new approach which consists of creating 2D animations using After Effect program and placing them on a virtual ground in VR composition made by VR Edit function of the program. Our approach also consists of making two such VR compositions, each for left and right eyes, and then combine them to make stereoscopic images. For the verification, we made a short scene to check with Oculus Quest HMD whether stereoscopic perceptions of 2D animation objects and background images were fully obtained. The result was positive. It was also verified that the addition of shadows reinforced these stereoscopic perceptions. For the purpose of obtaining more vivid space perception, however, it will be necessary to try various methodologies such as the use of forced perspective or the effective arragements of lights and shadows, etc.
