Introduction of the North Korean newspapers in the Captured Korean Documents in the National Archives and Records Administration

The captured Korean documents collection at the U. S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) is the documents that were captured by the U. S. military forces during the Korean War period. It is in the custody of Record Group 242, National Archives Collection of Foreign Records Seized. There are over 120 North Korean newspapers in the captured Korean documents. The North Korean newspapers in the captured Korean documents are consisted of four categories: first, newspapers that were published by North Korean organizations in 1945-1953; second, newspapers that were published in South Korea by the occupation authorities and agencies during the North Korean occupation of South Korea in the early phase of the Korean War; third, North Korean army’s military newspapers that were published during the Korean War; and fourth, the other several newspapers. The major part of the North Korean newspapers includes the Korean Labor Party (KLP) newspapers of center and local provinces, the central and local People’s Committee newspapers, combined KLP-People’s Committee newspapers of provinces. It also includes newspapers published by the Soviet authorities in North Korea, partisan newspapers in South Korea, and the Corps-Division level North Korean military newspapers. These North Korean newspapers are very rare and the only remaining ones that contain confidential information to study North Korea and Korean War.
