Choi, Hyungyong (2021), “A Norm of the Word-Initial Law and Vocabulary Types,” Language and Information Society 43. This paper aims at revealing the problems of the criterion of the vocabulary types (i.e., native Korean words, Sino-Korean words and loanwords) in the explanation of the word-initial law and suggesting an alternative that helps to understand the identity of the word-initial law. First, I assert through the changes of the norm of the word-initial law that the word-initial law was introduced according to the principle of phoneticism in Korean orthography. Then, I show the vocabulary type criterion is contradictory to this principle and the word structure information which is necessary for the application of the word-initial law. Therefore, the vocabulary type criterion has to be abandoned. Alternatively, the applicable forms of the initial-law have to be regarded as nouns and the non-applicable forms as suffixes.
