밀레니얼 제트 세대 출신으로, 서구의 제4세대 페미니즘을 주도하는 여성주의 포토그래퍼 페트라 콜린스가 주목받는 것은 그녀의 여성에 대한 주체적 시선을 담은 사진 아카이빙 때문이다. 이 연구는 그녀의 사진 작품에 내재한 여성 서사에 대한 근본적인 이해를 찾는 것에 목적을 둔다. 본 논문은 여성주의 관점으로 페트라 콜린스의 시각 작업을 조사하기 위해 여성주의와 이미지에 관한 서술의 기본개념과 관점을 설립하고, 콜린스의 이미지와 서술에 대한 분석의 배경이 되는 작품들을 수집한다. 주요 연구 대상은 콜린스가 ‘여성’을 주제로, 다수의 여성 작가들과 이끄는 온라인 아트 갤러리와 그녀의공식 홈페이지 그리고 3권의 사진집을 중심으로 자료를 분석한다. 이 연구는 여성주의 이미지를 토대로 전달하는 이미지의 특성을 찾고 그것이 가지는 의의를 관찰한다. 여성주의 관점으로 페트라 콜린스의 이미지 특성을 분석한 결과, 자신의 여성주의 성향을 표현하는 데 있어, 이미지를 구성하는 언어들로 연결한다. 그 특징적 요소는 주체적 시선과 수평적 구도, 핑크 색상 및 파스텔 색조의 활용, 패션과몸을 오브제로 활용이다. 이 같은 사진 언어를 취하는 콜린스가 전개하는 이미지의 의의는 여성 주제적 사고와 실재적 시선, 능동적 섹슈얼리티와 오토에로티시즘 그리고 소녀성의 수용과 같은 세 가지범주에서 정의될 수 있다. 타자에 의해 규정되고 대상화된 여성에 대한 시선이 범지구적인 논제로 부상하고 있는 시점에서, 페트라 콜린스가 생산하는 이미지는 그 자체로 이 시대의 여성주의를 반영한다. 서구권에서 제4세대 페미니즘을 대표할 작가로 주목받고 있는 콜린스의 작업은 지속적으로 동시대적 여성주의 방향을 설립하는 데 영향을 미칠 것이라 기대한다.

In order to examine the visual work of Petra Collins through a feminist perspective, the following study establishes the fundamental notions and perspectives of both feminist and visual narratives, and gathers different works to analyze Collins’s visual narrative. The main objects of study are the online art gallery, run by Collins and many other women photographers on the subject of ‘women’, her official web site and three photo books. The following research explores the visual characteristics of her feminist imagery and studies their significations. Through a feminist perspective, the analysis of Petra Collins’s visual characteristics illustrates how her feminist inclination is incorporated in the construction of her visual language. The characteristic elements include subjective viewpoints, horizontal composition, usage of pink and pastel tones, as well as usage of fashion and bodies as objects. Through these kinds of visual elements, the significations attributed by Collins can be found within the following three categories: women’s subjectivity and actual perception, active sexuality and auto eroticism, and affirmation of girlishness. Today’s feminism is reflected in the images generated by Petra Collins, especially in aperiod where the perceptions on women, that have been defined and objectified by others, are emerging as a global issue. She is becoming known as a major artist who is expected to represent fourth-wave feminism in the Western world, with a lasting influence in the establishment of contemporary feminism.
