Study of the Types and Origin of Contemporary Korean Women’s Mourning Garments

초록/요약

This study emerged from a desire to explore the types and origin of contemporary Korean women’s mourning garments and to assess public opinion regarding whether or not those mourning garments exhibit the traces of Japanese imperialism. Contemporary Korean women usually wear the black Gaeryang Hanbok. Prior to the Gaeryang Hanbok, Korean women wore a black Hanbok in the same style as that of the traditional Hanbok. And prior to that, they wore the white Hanbok. As recently as in the 2010s, Korean women were still appearing in white mourning garments on soap operas; however, in the past ten years, white mourning garments have been hard to find. It seems that the people began to wear black Hanbok in the mid-20th century and, at first, that was due to the influence of religion. The use of the universalized Hanbok worn today was promoted by funeral service companies and motivated by greater social comfort with black rather than white garments and by a change in the people’s perception of the funeral. In addition, there is no record of women in the Japanese colonial era wearing black mourning garments, rather, records show that they wore traditional white mourning garments throughout that time period.
