이 논문은 샤미소의 『그림자를 판 사나이』를 대상으로 학생들이 알레고리 작품을어떻게 읽어 내고 의미를 찾아가는지 살펴보고자 하는 것이다. 알레고리를 활용한 문학 작품 읽기 방식은 오랜 동안 ‘어떻게 하면 학생들로 하여금 직접 책을 읽게 할 것인가’ ‘학생들이 자신의 솔직한 생각을 부끄러워하지 않고 말할 수 있는 방법은 없는가’ 를 고민했던 필자에게 하나의 고무적인 사례라고 할 수 있기 때문이다. 연구의 순서는 먼저 알레고리의 개념에 대해 살펴보고, 알레고리가 문학교육에서 효과를 거둘수 있는 까닭은 제시하였다. 다음으로 『그림자를 판 사나이』를 소개하고 수많은 알레고리 작품 가운데 이 작품을 선택한 이유를 설명하였다. 다음으로 수업 차시를 통해실제 읽기의 과정이 어떻게 이루어졌는지를 제시하였다. 학생들은 먼저 작품을 읽고, 알레고리 이론에 대해서 학습한 다음 알레고리의 관점에서 『그림자를 판 사나이』의의미를 탐색하는 순서로 작품의 이해에 한 걸음씩 나아갔다. 알레고리를 활용한 문학작품 읽기 방식은 학생들로 하여금 스스로 텍스트를 읽게 만든다는 점, 환상적인 전개와 내용을 통해 학생들의 호기심을 불러일으킬 수 있다는 점, 자신의 경험과 지식을 적극적으로 활용해서 텍스트의 의미를 찾아가는 것이 가능하다는 점, 텍스트와 함께 컨텍스트를 고려하면서 작품을 해석할 수 있다는 점 등에 있어서 매우 효율적인문학 작품 읽기 방법이라고 할 수 있다.

This paper aims to examine how students read and determine the meaning of the allegory text surrounding Chamisso’s “The Man Who Sold Shadow” in Ewha Womans University’s class, “Integrated Thinking and Writing.” The period used for this study was the second semester of 2020 to the first semester of 2021. I find the text interpretation using allegory an encouraging example, as I have long considered how to persuade students to read books and educate them that literature works do not indicate a single theme. Additionally, I have pondered if it is possible for students to express their thoughts without fearing judgement. The purpose of this study is to share this example and reconsider reading education in university. The students first read the work, learned the allegory theory, and then took steps to understand the work by exploring the meaning of “The Man Who Sold the Shadow” from the allegoric perspective. Subsequently, the students were quite interested in the work itself, completing the reading prior to class. Furthermore, based on what they read, they understood the shadows and boots in the text and explored the work’s allegorical meaning. I believe the allegorical interpretation is meaningful in that it trains students to consider the sensibility and meaning of the work through detailed reading.
