A Phenomenological Study on the Career Transition of Early Career Legal Secretarie

Job seekers seeking employment as legal secretaries is increasing due to its stableenvironment and organization's compliance with the Labor Standards Act. However, increasingnumber of legal secretaries leave to change jobs during their beginning careers. Despite theactive research on early career transitions, research on career transition of legal secretaries isnonexistent. Therefore, this study explored the motivation and process of career transition oflegal secretaries in their early careers and unveiled the meaning of their experiences. In-depthinterviews were conducted with eight former legal secretaries who experienced career transitionwithin five years after working at a large law firm in Seoul. Phenomenological research methodwas employed, and a total of four categories and ten cluster of themes were found. First, participants made career transitions owing to work limitations, relationship andstructural difficulties, and personal factors. During transition, legal secretary career was used asa stepping stone to current careers, or were challenged to initiate a new career. Legalsecretaries confirmed that they developed various competencies via such work experience. Lastly, career transition was discussed in the career development perspective by discovering themeaning of work and career transition experience of legal secretaries. This study can providefundamental data for career development on career transition experiences of legal secretaries
