Growth of the Field and Vanishing Boundaries: A Retrospective and Prospective of Asian Art History (2019-2020)

초록/요약

Through analyses of the monographs and peer-reviewed articles published in 2019 and 2020, this paper examines the recent trends in Korea academia in the field of Asian art history. The analyses lead to the following conclusions. First, new methodologies are actively adopted in study of various topics in Asian art, and the number of academic publications on Asian art history is dramatically increasing. While the great majority of studies focused on Chinese arts in the past, artworks of more diverse regions began to be explored in recent scholarship. Second, among the subfields of Asian art history, the subfield of modern and contemporary art is rapidly increasing. And a growing number of art historians are now exploring material culture of Asia, which is also a new trend in Korean academia. Third, as the field is being rapidly globalized, more and more Korean scholars began to publish peer-reviewed articles on Asian art in international journals. Simultaneously, some foreign scholars chose to publish their articles in Korean art history journals in the recent two years, which indicates the global growth of art history journals issued in Korea. 2019 and 2020 also witnessed publication of quite a few monographs co-authored by scholars from different countries. All these are indicators that exhibit the development and globalization of the field of Asian art history. In general, the field of Asian art history has shown rapid development and tendency towards positive globalization in recent years.
