수평적 취향공동체를 통한 새로운 구별짓기: 독서모임 커뮤니티 <트레바리>의 사례를 중심으로

본 연구는 최근 청년세대 사이에서 새로운 트렌드로 자리 잡은 ‘살롱문화 모임’의 대표 사례인 <트레바리>에 주목, 유료 회원제 독서모임 커뮤니티로서 수평적 취향공동체를 지향하는 <트레바리>가 어떠한 측면에서 ‘구별짓기’의 공간으로 기능하고 있는지를 살펴보았다. 디지털세대라 할 수 있는 청년세대가 ‘독서’에 고액의 비용을 지불하고, ‘오프라인’ 모임을 선택하는 역설적인 현상 이면에 자리하는 심층적 의미와 동인(動因)을 파악하기 위해 <트레바리>의 특성을 분석하였고, 최소 1회기(4개월) 이상 <트레바리>에 참여한 경험이 있는 사회초년생 직장인 13인을 대상으로 <트레바리>에의 가입 동기와 활동 경험, 탈퇴 이유 등에 대한 심층면접을 진행하였다. 분석 결과, <트레바리>는 크게 두 가지 차원에서 구별짓기 공간으로 기능하고 있었다. 첫째, 연구참여자들은 <트레바리>에 가입함으로써 개방적이고 주체적이며 지적인 동시에 트렌디한 이미지를 확보하는 등 ‘청년세대의 코드(code)와 정체성’을 드러내며 타 세대 및 <트레바리> 외부에 있는 사람들과 자신들을 구별 짓는 모습을 보였다. 둘째, 연구참여자들은 <트레바리> 활동 과정에서 ‘질(quality)’이 담보된 사람들과의 교류를 추구하고, <트레바리> 내부에서 형성된 인적 네트워크의 활용의 한계와 4-50대 회원들의 위축과 소외를 경험하는데, 이는 표면적으로 ‘수평성’을 지향하는 <트레바리>가 내부적으로는 적극적인 ‘포섭’과 ‘배제’가 이루어지는 구별짓기의 장(field)으로 기능하고 있음을 보여주는 결과라 할 수 있다.

This research focuses on Trevari, the membership-based book club in South Korea, which has recently become a popular trend among young people. It is seemingly paradoxical that a digital generation is willing to pay high membership fee for ‘reading’ and voluntarily choose to engage in ‘offline’ meetings. Through in-depth interviews with 13 individuals engaging in Trevari for at least 4 months, we conclude that this community functions as a field of ‘distinction’ largely in two aspects. First, interviewees were found to distinguish themselves from other generations as well as from those who do not partake in Trevari, by signalling the ‘code and identity of young generation’ and establishing their images as open-minded, autonomous and intelligent people. Second, it is evident that the research participants pursued interactions only with those of ‘high quality’ amid the community activities, and, at the same time, alienate certain groups of people. The interviewees in their 40s and 50s commonly reported to have experienced alienation and ostracization within the community, which clearly indicates that Trevari has its distinctive functions as a field for both ‘incorporation’ and ‘ostracization’.
