Office-Look Design Development for Chinese Millennial Women

초록/요약

Millennials, who have emerged as major consumers in China, are a generation born with material abundance. They were raised in digital culture and maintain a different lifestyle from the previous generation. Millennials express their individuality through fashion. However, the existing work apparel fashions for work do not meet their needs. Research is required on the development of work apparel that meets their characteristics and demands. This study focuses on Chinese millennial working women’s desire to express their individuality. It conducted a survey and developed on workplace clothing that combines fashion trends and enhances artistry and commerciality. The questionnaire’s results showed that women’s specific needs meant that they utilized popular clothing items in following order: Blouse, dress, shirt, skirt, jacket, and two-piece dress, and spring and autumn clothes. Additionally, their preferred style was simple and classic, followed by trendy and colorful, and luxurious styles. To reflect the results of the survey’s design preferences for each item, I developed a pair of blouses and skirts to match the colors and styles that work well in spring for design I. Design II features a jacket and pants for autumn; design III is a dress, and design IV is a coat. I implemented a total of four designs. This study is meaningful because it specifically presented the results of an item-specific preference survey and attempted designs based on workplace norms to identify consumer needs accurately. Chinese office looks are a challenge requiring subdivisions to match millennials’ preferences and fashion sense, which differ from the previous generation. As modern life, culture, and business change rapidly in line with the pace of technology's development, we hope that this study will serve as a foundation for companies’ rapid and agile response of companies to consumer demand changes.
