Reviewing the Literature Regarding Women‘s Representation in Sport Society & Analyzing the Current Status of Gender Diversity in the National Federations(NFs)

초록/요약

The purpose of this study was to propose policies to enhance gender diversity in the National Federations(NFs) registered in the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee(KSOC). We reviewed literatures on women’s representation in sport and investigated the ratio of women on the executive boards in the NFs. The findings from the literature reviews were as follows. First, the rationale for the minimum 30 percent of women in the decision-making level suggested by IOC was discussed. Second, dissimilar policies implemented in different countries to reach the 30 percent target was reviewed. Third, significant institutional changes for gender equality within South Korean government were observed. The findings from the study on current status of gender diversity in NFs revealed that the average percentage of women on the executive boards was 16% and only 6 federations achieved the minimum target of 30 percent. The implications of the findings were as follows: First, it is necessary for NFs to be involved more actively in establishing gender-related policies. Second, amendment of specific clauses on current KSOC regulation is required by inserting mandatory elements. Third, it is timely appropriate to deepen the discussion on the implementation of the gender quota in sport organizations providing that the grace period is given. Considering the achievement of South Korea in global sport and expectation to set the best example, it is urgent to take action by implementing policies which improves gender equality.
