이 논문은 『에우튀프론』에는 에우튀프론 문제가 없다는 최근의 사뭇 도발적인 주장에 대해 보다 전통적인 해석을 옹호한다. 특히 『에우튀프론』의 중심주제를, 특히나 신명론(divine command theory)과 연결시키는 전통의 해석을 강화해서, 『에우튀프론』 10a-11b의 소크라테스의 논증이 권위를 가지는 대상이 신일 경우뿐 아니라 합리적인 판단자로 상정되는 모든 대상에 대해 성립한다는 것을 지적하고 그 논증이 성립하는 이유를 설명한다. 소크라테스의 메시지는 권위에 대해 권위주의적 복종을 하지 말아야 한다는 것, 즉 권위자가 판단을 내리는 근거를 이해하지 못한 채, 그리고 이해하려는 노력도 없이 단지 그 판단을 내리는 주체가 권위를 가지고 있기 때문에 그 판단을 옳다고 받아들이고 그에 따라 행동하지 말아야 한다는 것이다. 물론 이러한 메시지는 소크라테스/플라톤의 철학에 대한 이해에 맞닿아 있다.

This paper aims to defend the traditional interpretation of Euthyphro against the recent, rather provocative claim that there is no Euthyphro problem in Euthyphro. I attain that goal by pointing out that Socrates’ argument in 10a-11b applies not only to god (as in the immediate context of Euthyphro), but also to all the authoritative agents, divine or not, as far as they are considered rational agents and explicate the arguments. Socrates’ message is against what I call ‘authoritarian obedience.’ When it comes to authority, people tend to obey the authority only because he/she is an authority without understanding the reason why the authoritative figure reaches that view. Socrates’ argument in Euthyphro provides a powerful argument against that attitude, which applies beyond the context of religion.
