A Study on Machiavelli’s and Arendt’s Republicanism: Focusing on the Relationship between the Public and Private Realms

초록/요약

This article examines that the core problem of Machiavelli’s and Arendt’s political theories lies in the protection of the public realm. Machiavelli finds the cause of the fall of the Roman Republic in the Agrarian law and the prolongation of commands. The Agrarian Law encouraged confrontation between factions, leading to violence. The prolongation of commands made the army of the republic the private army of the generals. The Roman Republic collapsed when the public realm was invaded by the private realm and became a battleground for private interests. According to Arendt, as the private realm became the main concern of the public realm due to the expansion of the economy in modern times, society emerged. Human beings in society have only one purpose, the reproduction of life, and act only as working people as members of the household. The public realm as the realm of action and speech, disappears. What maintains the public realm is the freedom and diversity of community members. The reason why the public realm should be protected from the private realm is to preserve ‘republic’, i.e. the world, in which we live together by protecting free- dom and diversity from injustice, uniformity and violence.
